Reform Activities

Another type of activity Klanswomen were active in was the effort to “reform” the public schools. Klanswomen often visited the school to hand out Bibles or copies of the Ten Commandments; they often tried to have Catholic teachers fired from their positions, they tried to have the Catholic encyclopedias removed from the schools, and pushed in favor of racial segregation in public schools. They also worked to stop public schools from closing and fought to end the teaching of the German language in school, and raised money in their communities to support a change from the narrow-minded education taught in public schools. Klanswomen also used their new found political power in the 1920s to run for the school board seats so that they could apply the Klan’s program to “Americanize” and make the public school system a more Protestant one.
